Mercedes-Benz to Offer G-wagen Fancification Program
The Mercedes-Benz G-wagen is in a class by itself. Severely lacking in its road manners despite a recent and comprehensive update, it is a superior off-roader—and an awesome fashion statement. And it’s that latter quality that we suspect its civilian customers care about most (it is also very popular with armed forces around the globe). Those customers get even more now, with a new individualization program called “designo manufaktur.”

Offering new materials and color combinations, the program features a few pre-configured interior and exterior packages, hand-finished at the Magna Steyr prodiction site in Graz, Austria. Standalone options include several new wheel styles in black, and bodyside strips that can be executed with a carbon-fiber inlay on AMG versions. The Night Package, offered on other Mercedes-Benz cars, migrates to the G-wagen as well; it replaces several chrome and body-colored parts with black-metallic trim. Mercedes-Benz also is adding new colors to the portfolio, and the roof can now be painted black.

Until now, we could only refer to Toyota’s S-FR sports-car concept has having a single face. It was a happy face, inspired by the classic Toyota Sports 800 sports car’s, and news that the little coupe would reach production made this year’s Tokyo auto show a fun one. For the Tokyo Auto Salon—essentially Japan’s SEMA—Toyota teamed up with Gazoo Racing to transform the S-FR’s face into a decidedly angrier one. The result is the S-FR Racing concept, a track-ready take on the S-FR that tosses out the original concept’s cutesy, wide-eyed guppy-mouthed countenance for a cutesy, wide-eyed guppy-mouthed face straddled by carbon-fiber canards, a splitter, and a vented hood. See? Angrier!

Toyota hasn’t fully elaborated yet on what Gazoo Racing is doing to its adorable little sports car, which is tinier than the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ and larger than a Miata, but we do know the S-FR Racing concept will have carbon-fiber spoilers, wicked center-lock wheels, and all of our attention when it debuts at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January. Our hope is that the stock S-FR concept’s four-cylinder engine has been beefed up even further, while the already light 2160-pound curb weight has been reduced. Although the S-FR is going into production, it isn’t yet clear whether or not the final product will come to the U.S. One thing’s for sure: This Racing concept has even less of a chance of coming here, mostly because it likely won’t be built at all. Still, we’d love for our assumptions to be proven wrong . . .

Obvious fact: Most Porsches that aren’t SUVs or hatchback sedans have bright resale values ahead of them, and Stuttgart finally has awakened to the potential of making serious money on these classic rides. Witness the first Porsche Classic Center, which opened in the Netherlands.
-Like Mercedes-Benz has done with its Classic Center in Irvine, California, Porsche wants to make the sort of lucre pulled in by the most esteemed independent Euro shops and cash in on the servicing, parts, and repairs purchased by its most fervid owners. Porsche wants to transform 100 dealerships into “Classic Partners,” which will serve the full catalog of 52,000 original parts and take loving care of its air-cooled beauties, such as with specially formulated oil in Porsche-branded tins. These dealers will employ separate Classic floorspace with trained staff, paint bays, unique repair tools, and routine maintenance—all of which, Porsche promises, will go beyond what an ordinary dealer can do with these cars. According to the carmaker, more than 70 percent of all Porsche models ever built are still on the road, and beyond the profit potential, Stuttgart wants to take a more direct role in keeping them running.

Currently, there’s one such dealer in Holland’s Gelderland province; we’ll see two Classic-certified dealers in the United States. One will be at Porsche’s Atlanta headquarters, as yet another attraction at the Porsche Experience Center (where you also can test-drive nearly every model variant on a 1.6-mile track). The other will be at a second Porsche Experience Center scheduled to open in Carson, California, during the third quarter of 2016. That center also will headquarter the company’s factory-run North American motorsports division when it moves from Santa Ana. (Need a new GT4 Clubsport while your 917 is in the shop? ’Tis the place.) Additional Classic Centers will be scattered across Europe, Japan, Australia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.

At the moment, Porsche isn’t quite ready to refurbish and then resell its own vintage machines. (Mercedes-Benz has just begun that very process in Germany). Right now, the best way of landing a pristine 911 C4S or a slantnose 930 is to attend a cars-and-coffee event and leave a Post-It Note on the owner’s windshield. We hope, anyway. IIHS to Begin Attaching Headlight Performance Standards to Safety Ratings
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is working to incorporate a headlight-rating segment into its analysis of cars’ safety performance, and it is working to do so soon. According to Automotive News, the research firm is looking to tie headlight performance to a car’s safety rating as soon as 2017. This means that, in order for a car to attain, say, the highest rating of Top Safety Pick +, its headlights must meet yet-to-be-determined criteria. Most likely, expensive technologies such as steerable headlight modules, LED bulbs, and more will be necessary items.

The implications of IIHS’s move are far-reaching—just look at the results of the recently introduced (by car-development standards) small-overlap crash test—and could force automakers to adopt fancier lighting tech sooner. Currently, an IIHS Top Safety Pick is earned by way of “good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test,” according to IIHS. A Top Safety Pick +, on the other hand, must “earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.” Most recently, IIHS hung the requirement that cars have front-crash prevention technology (automatic braking and collision warning) around the neck of a Top Safety Pick + rating; as the firm notes, “Top Safety Pick + winners with optional front crash prevention qualify for the higher award only when equipped with the technology.” As a result, we’ve seen a flood of models add that feature.

It’s a fair assumption that similar bait will be set with headlight technology. Today, HID headlights are only just starting to become widespread in average-priced cars, while LED headlights and adaptive, steerable lights are still optional and largely the purview of luxury vehicles. We’re all for the democratization of better headlights—and safer vehicles—but it isn’t yet clear what the implications will be for vehicle cost. Nor is it clear whether the IIHS’s upcoming mandate might speed the availability of future lighting technology such as laser lights, matrix-LED lamps, and the like that currently are tied up in U.S. regulatory tape.
